Summary

Tania is a North Wales based religious education specialist and theologian who has been working in these fields for over 25 years, leading and developing programmes at BA, BEd, MA, PGCE primary and secondary level, as well as research degree level.

She holds a BA and MA in Theology from Oxford University, an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in Education (focusing on theology, psychology and education) from the University of Warwick. Tania’s academic research has a strong relationship with professional practice in church-related, school-related, and community-related contexts. As an active researcher in religion, values and education, she recognises the importance of connecting research and educational practice.This is underpinned by the professional qualification of PGCE in Religious Education and English, ordination as an Anglican priest in the Church in Wales, and active membership of national and international organisations concerned with religion and education in schools and society.

Tania has held academic posts in Wales and England, including the universities of Bangor (1994-2007), Glyndwr (2011-2015) , Warwick (2015-2018), and currently (as Reader of Religions, Humanities and Education) at Bishop Grosseteste University (2018-cont). She is also Honorary Executive Director of the St Mary’s Centre, Wales, which is an Anglican research institute. In addition, she is a Visiting Research Associate in the Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, South Africa (2016-cont) and Visiting Professor in Queen’s College, Newfoundland, Canada (2017-cont).

Tania has originated curriculum resources for both primary and secondary religious education in Wales and has been closely involved with the development of religious education in the Curriculum for Wales 2022.

Research interests

Tania describes herself as an empirical theologian who also works in the fields of education, the psychology of religion, and the sociology of religion. She has contributed subject expertise and skills in qualitative methodologies to a number of large ‘mixed methods’ research projects. Her publications are wide-ranging and include research concerned with: prayer and sacred place; religious education; ‘faith’ schools; religious and spiritual experience; young people’s attitudes to religious diversity; psychological type theory and biblical hermeneutics; online religion; and implicit religion. With the Revd Canon Dr Randolph Ellis, Tania co-leads the Prayer and Sacred Place Project, which is concerned with approaching ‘place’ and ‘prayer’ in new ways through exploratory and speculative research studies, drawing on the disciplines of philosophy, theology, phenomenology, speculative realism, and education.
